Great, useful design puts success in the way of those who use it well.
Are you looking for information about design for marketing? Seeking ideas and inspiration, or the help of someone who knows how to put design into commercial action?
You’re in the right place. I’ve built this for marketing directors, business owners, buyers and fans of design and advertising so you can rummage around and get in touch with the thinking and the projects I offer for scrutiny.
I’m Richard Gregory and my primary focus is on doing design and creative direction for brand communication.
Why this work matters
I believe that, even in this age of media for all, the first visual impression of any kind of organisation says a huge amount about how much they care.
And yet, purposeful design is not just about making something look good, but about making it fit to do a specific job. I like it when beauty in the work emerges from that need to get the job done.
Those are not opposing views. Instead they point to the process of design thinking and doing that could help your organisation talk credibly about its value to others.
Designers and marketers can influence that thinking. It’s part of my mission to help businesses like yours to raise their game when communicating the value of what they do.

I am a designer first, naturally curious, and I find experimentation deep and nourishing…
Designing for industry
In my design practice I create purposefully planned work that can turn a business problem on its head. Great, useful design puts success in the way of those who employ it well.
I explain this by showing you examples and case studies. Take a look at some design commissions.
Staying sharp by making art
I am a designer first, naturally curious, and I find experimentation deep and nourishing, like soul food. With that in mind, I keep a separate stream of self-directed works happening along with the industrial commissions.
For me, making art is a way to explore new ideas and become familiar with alternatives in media, tools and technologies. It helps to keep me informed and forward-thinking.
For you, I offer this stream of work as a source of ideas and entertainment. And there are pieces you can buy. Visit my self-directed projects.
Thinking out loud
Things seen out in the world, innovations, project observations, ideas that I believe will help you – these things will make their way into my blog.
You can read it right now and you can have it delivered conveniently and securely straight to your inbox.
And there’s a newsletter, surprisingly called The Letter. Quarterly, outward-looking, designed above all to be helpful. The first issue is set for April 2018 – I urge you to sign up for it now.
If they’re not for you, I make it dead easy to unsubscribe.
Richard Gregory is…
…a designer and creative director by trade, with plenty of solid, sales-generating work in the bag.
I’ve run my own practice for 25 years, serving clients in sectors that include the arts, education, engineering, government and travel.
I learned my craft at Ogilvy’s London B2B/direct response outfit and helped to run the design and marketing arm of (what is now) Adam&EveDDB.
Alongside my design work I dip into the worlds of fine art and music as I widen my media gaze.
